Behavioral Health and Chronic Pain
Chronic pain and mental health are deeply connected. Patients living with ongoing pain frequently develop anxiety, depression, sleep disruption, and feelings of hopelessness, which in turn can intensify the pain itself. Because our behavioral health team works in the same clinic as our pain management specialists, we can provide coordinated treatment that addresses both the psychological and physical dimensions of chronic pain. This is one of the most meaningful advantages of receiving behavioral health care at an integrated medical clinic rather than a standalone therapy practice.
Our Therapeutic Approach
We do not take a one-modality-fits-all approach to therapy. Our clinicians are trained in multiple evidence-based therapeutic frameworks and adapt their approach based on what will be most effective for each individual client. Modalities used at our clinic include:
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): A structured therapy originally developed for trauma processing, EMDR helps clients reprocess distressing memories and reduce the emotional charge associated with past experiences. Mike Elder, LCSW, is trained in this modality.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): A widely used, research-backed approach that helps clients identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to anxiety, depression, and other conditions.
- Motivational Interviewing (MI): A collaborative, goal-oriented approach particularly effective for clients working through ambivalence about change, including those in addiction recovery.
- Solution-Focused Therapy: A brief, forward-looking approach that focuses on building solutions rather than dissecting problems, helping clients identify strengths and set achievable goals.
- Family Systems Therapy: An approach that views individual challenges in the context of family dynamics and relationships, useful for family conflict, parenting issues, and couples work.
- Trauma-Informed Care (ARC Framework): Used by our Clinical Director, the Attachment, Regulation, and Competency framework provides a structured approach to working with clients who have experienced complex or developmental trauma.
Types of Therapy Available
Individual Therapy
One-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist tailored to your specific concerns, goals, and pace. Individual therapy is our most commonly requested service and is available for all of the conditions listed above.
Couples Counseling
For couples experiencing communication breakdowns, trust issues, infidelity, or simply feeling disconnected, our therapists provide a structured, neutral space to work through conflict and rebuild the relationship. Judy Brevaire, LMFT, brings over four decades of experience in couples and family dynamics to this work.
Family Therapy
Family therapy addresses dysfunction, conflict, and communication patterns within the family unit. It is particularly valuable when one family member’s mental health challenges, substance use, or behavioral issues are affecting the entire household. Sessions may include parents and children, adult siblings, or multigenerational configurations depending on the situation.
Group Therapy
Our behavioral health department offers facilitated group sessions on specific topics. Groups provide the opportunity to learn from shared experiences, practice new coping strategies in a supportive environment, and reduce the isolation that often accompanies mental health challenges. Contact our office for current group schedules and availability.
Behavioral Health Inside an Integrated Medical Clinic
At most therapy practices, your counselor works in isolation. If you are also managing chronic pain, a medication regimen, or a physical health condition, your therapist may never speak with your prescribing physician, and vice versa. At Quality of Life Integrated Health, that gap does not exist.
Our behavioral health providers share a medical record system and a physical building with our primary care, pain management, and sexual medicine teams. When your therapist identifies a concern that has a medical component, or when your physician notices signs of depression, anxiety, or substance use, the referral happens down the hall rather than across town. For patients dealing with chronic pain and behavioral health concerns simultaneously, or those managing addiction alongside a medical treatment plan, this level of coordination produces meaningfully better outcomes.
What to Expect at Your First Behavioral Health Appointment
Scheduling
Call or text (520) 733-2250 or Request an Appointment Online.
If you’re not sure where to start, our team can help guide you and connect you with the appropriate provider. We offer in-person appointments at our Tucson clinic.
You do not need to share detailed medical information to get started.
Your First Session
Your initial appointment is a comprehensive intake assessment. Your therapist will ask about your current concerns, personal history, family background, and treatment goals. This is also your opportunity to ask questions, share what has or has not worked in the past, and get a sense of whether the fit feels right. There is no pressure to disclose more than you are comfortable with in the first session.
Ongoing Treatment
Based on your intake, your therapist will recommend a treatment cadence (typically weekly or biweekly sessions to start) and outline the therapeutic approach they plan to use. Treatment plans are collaborative and flexible. As your needs evolve, your therapist will adjust the approach and, if appropriate, coordinate with your primary care provider or pain management team.
